    What is The Erotic Review?

ER Issue 78Twelve years ago the Erotic Review was started by a group of enthusiastic amateurs who learned about magazine editing and publishing the hard way. Nothing quite like it has ever been seen in Britain and the magazine’s central theme of an intelligent approach to matters sexual, rather than a smutty snigger, or a humourless, turgid lecture, was seen as radical. And the writing was fresh, innovative and full of enthusiasm.

When other publishers acquired the title, whether successful Maxim mogul Felix Dennis or, later, the soft porn barons and owners of Penthouse, the Erotic Review stubbornly resisted all attempts to be dumbed down or popularised. Due to its idio-syncratic and eccentric nature, ER will not flourish in just any publishing environment.

We believe in ER because we think sex is good fun, important for the continuance of the human race and essential inspiration for culture in general. Because we think that when it comes to recreational sex, single women have been second-class citizens for far too long. Because we firmly believe that it should be left up to the Rupert Murdochs, Paul Dacres or David Sullivans of this world to choose the way in which society is made to enjoy or be aware of sex.

ER won’t be approved by WH Smith’s. It is as irreverent, informative, outspoken and witty as is necessary for intelligent readers to enjoy it. ER collects a broad range of established and new writers sympathetic to the theme. Some explore its social dynamic; others contribute fiction, while still others look at the arts, the media, the adult entertainment industry, the law and politics.

ER is a monthly magazine: its 10 full-colour issues per year will include two double issues. In December 2007, we’re relaunching ER in an exciting new format.
